For many years, a quarrel debated by many — but solved by few — has been in circulation. “What should we eat today?” The answer to this question is simple and it works for any time of the day. Sopapillas. Commonly known for its role as a popular dessert in every Mexican restaurant from San Francisco to Boston, the sopapilla can be utilized in any meal. After trying this fried Mexican bread, you will find a whole new meaning to life.
Breakfast
Tired of the same old, boring scrambled eggs breakfast? Stuff them into a sopapilla and put cheese and green chile on top. Voila, sopapilla breakfast. Or you could have a stack of sopapilla pancakes. The point is, there’s more to life than bacon and eggs… milk and cereal… avocado toast… You need bacon and fried eggs served atop a sopapilla. Milk, next to a piping hot stack of berry and cinnamon filled sopapilla pancakes. A breakfast salad with avocado, tomato, egg and sausage served inside a bowl made out of a sopapilla. Revitalize your breakfast.
Lunch
Well it’s about noon and you’re in need of lunch at work. Let me guess, you’ve packed the same old turkey and cheese sandwich, side of potato chips. Wrong! You packed a stuffed sopapilla that has made your mouth water all morning. Which was it today? The chicken and Spanish rice sopapilla with lettuce and tomato? Or maybe pork with green chile, sour cream and avocado? The fact of the matter is you’ve grown tired of being the person at the office whose tuna salad sandwich stinks up the whole second floor. You are now the person whose stuffed sopapilla sends an aroma so delectable and mouthwatering throughout the air, everyone asks for your recipe. Sopapillas: the modern-day office savior of fishy smelling microwaves, the replacement of hamburger helper and ramen lunches. A positive hiatus for your nine to five.
Dinner
After a hard day’s work, you know exactly what to serve for dinner. It is guaranteed to please the whole family. I’m not talking about spaghetti or hot dogs. No, I’m talking about the exquisite, smothered sopapilla. Yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds. Carne asada marinated in a citrus mojo, with pico de gallo, refried beans and a green chile sauce to drizzle on top. What about guacamole, grilled pineapple and chicken, cheese, rise and a sweet mole sauce to fill the spaces in between? Smothered burritos aren’t good enough anymore and it’s time for you to take matters into your own hands. Create the perfect smothered sopapilla.
Dessert
There’s no secret here, sopapillas were perfected as a dessert. You’ve had pie and cake one too many times recently. Well, it’s sopapilla time. Stuff it with strawberries and drizzle chocolate or caramel on top. Create sopapilla cheesecake bars or go simple and dine on the original cinnamon sopapilla with honey. You can’t go wrong.
The Sopapilla
It seems we are at an impasse. I’ve explained, after years of research, that sopapillas are good with every imaginable type of food and here you sit, not eating any. Rise my friends, go forth and discover what you’ve been missing. Indulge upon the secrets of the sopapilla. Alter your reality. Improve your cultural diversity. Embark on an adventure of utmost delight. The sopapilla delight.
